Jewish Adult Education Centre

The new spring/summer program will be published on February 20, 2023.

Jewish Adult Education Centre

The Jewish Adult Education Centre is open to anyone with an interest in Jewish culture and history. Classes, study days, lectures, readings and excursions on specific or general subjects are as much a part of the range on offer as Hebrew and Yiddish language courses, seminars in Jewish religious philosophy, and cookery or dance classes. Students particularly enjoy the excursions, which can be small-scale, local affairs that trace Jewish life in the area, or trips further afield to other European countries. The Jewish Adult Education Centre also cooperates with other adult education organisations, running a three-way dialogue with other faith-based providers and with the Adult Education Centre in Frankfurt.

“NOT ONLY ASHES AND DUST“ – THE SOUNDTRACK OF HOLOCAUST REMEMBERANCE DAY IN THE ISRAELI MEDIA

With Dr. Uri Dorchin (in English).

According to the Israeli law, broadcasts of the Israeli media during Yom HaShoah (the national remembrance day of the Holocaust) are required to address the special status of that day. Aside from documentaries and other contents related to the Holocaust, the unique atmosphere of that day is tailored by musical editing that is special for that event. In this lecture we will examine the consideration behind musical and programming choices; we will see that the share of traditional “Holocaust Day songs” reduces while there is a growing trend toward newer and even innovative musical repertoire. This trend reveals the need to update the musical variety in that day, in part to make it relevant for a younger generation of Israeli listeners.

MIZRAHI RAP IN ISRAEL – ORIENTAL MUSIC, SYMBOLIC BLACKNESS AND THE QUEST FOR GLOBAL PARTICIPATION

With Dr. Uri Dorchin (in English).

Since its foundation Israel has regarded itself as a European outpost in the Middle-East. Accordingly, Muzika Mizrahit, i.e. oriental music made by Jews of Arab descent, was traditionally excluded from the local mainstream. One musical scene that constantly challenges this approach is that of Israeli rap. In this talk I will address the question of why does the most American-oriented genre - local practitioners of which exemplify the diversity in Israeli society - constantly feature Mizrahi musical elements? To answer this question I will analyze layers of symbolic meaning attributed by Israeli rappers to Mizrahiut (identifying with or being a Mizrahi Jew), including a type of local "blackness" associated with marginality, and a positioning between East and West. I argue that in becoming a signifier of local authenticity Muzika Mizrahit have also become cultural asset in the era of cosmopolitan musical trade.

A CHRONICLE OF DEPORTATION, EXTERMINATION AND EXPULSION (1/2).

PRELUDE TO AN EXHIBITION PROJECT 2024

With Dr. Ilana Salama Ortar (in English).

Through words, sound, video clips, objects, and drawings, this lecture explores Jewish history during World War II and traces the history of an improvised building element made of clay pipes, originally developed by the German organization Todt for the construction of the DP camp Kaufernig VII, which then was transformed into a general building block during the construction of Le Camp du Grand Arénas for Holocaust survivors and displaced North African Jews in Marseille from 1945 to 1966. In works such as "Maman/Ima" and "Shibboleth," Ilana Salama Ortar, whose works are represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum, and the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, among others, processes the forced expulsion, the construct of the foreign body, and the meaning of aged migrant women at that time. These and other artworks will be exhibited and presented during the lecture. Dr. Ilana Salama Ortar is an interdisciplinary Israeli artist, curator, researcher and visiting professor.
